Capitolo 115

Every attitude writes the history that will read us back

Every attitude adds a trace to the relational story that will later be used to interpret our gestures, our silences and our promises.

An elderly couple, a Black woman and an Arab man, talking in a living room.

Our partner does not discover who we are only through grand declarations. They observe us when we speak to a waiter, answer a child, handle a family disagreement, mention a past relationship or receive a confidence.

Every attitude adds a line to the file that will be consulted later.

We sometimes want to control our image through explanations. But the image we narrate always ends up meeting the person we actually are.

Our gestures teach what our words will have to prove

If we humiliate those with less power, our romantic gentleness does not entirely erase the information. If we tell the secrets of all our loved ones, our partner has a reason to remain cautious with their own. If we speak of every former partner as a monster, they may wonder what character they will become after us.

Observing these gestures does not mean deciding that the future is already written. A person can change their conduct depending on the relationship, acknowledge a fault and evolve. It only means that what we do elsewhere legitimately contributes to the way we are known here.

Relational influence does not need manipulation. We can explain what a behavior produces, make our request concrete and propose a different experience. Forcing an outcome, hiding our intention or instilling fear to obtain obedience destroys the value we claim to be building.

Removing a flaw is not always enough

Stopping an attack is necessary. The couple then needs a positive quality to take its place.

No longer interrupting allows the other person to finish. Listening with curiosity gives them the feeling of existing. No longer neglecting a project stops the frustration. Participating, proposing and following through on a task create a new story.

The value we bring can give the other person a reason to protect the bond. It must never become a way of making them dependent, indebted or less free. Love gains strength when it creates happiness and security, not when it confines.

A positive quality is not always recognized at its true worth. We can nevertheless check whether it truly meets a need or whether we are only giving what we like to offer.

Today becomes tomorrow's reference

After a fault, a promise describes what we want to become. Repair begins when, in the situation that used to awaken the old behavior, we bring a different response.

Every truth told before being discovered, every boundary respected without surveillance and every conflict gone through without threats writes a new reference. A single scene does not rewrite everything. A coherent trajectory can change the meaning of the ones that follow.

We are responsible for what our presence teaches. Our partner, tomorrow, will consult part of what we do today.

It is therefore not necessary to fabricate a beautiful image. We must write a story that reality will be able to reread without contradiction.

The most useful reference appears where the old method used to return

A kind attention after an argument can count. It does not yet show how we will respond when the obstacle that triggered our hurtful words returns. Progress becomes more legible when a comparable situation receives a different conduct.

If we used to decide alone when a project excited us, consulting before the next commitment offers a new reference. If we revealed a confidence in anger, preserving that confidence during a disagreement teaches something more precise than our gentleness the next day. We do not need to provoke a difficulty to prove our change; we can observe the occasions that life actually presents.

This reference protects two experiences: the other person discovers what they can expect, and we discover what we are capable of doing differently. The self-respect that follows does not require us to be perfect. It rests on a fact that we can name, reproduce and adjust. We thus build trust through lived abilities, rather than through an image that would have to be accepted without examination.

Lived proof is worth more than the announced diploma

We can know the right words, read about couples and explain respect perfectly. Our partner mainly encounters what that knowledge becomes when we are contradicted.

A positive quality is not proven by its name. We are not listening because we claim to be, but because the other person can finish a sentence without being punished. We are not reliable because our intention is good, but because a kept commitment exists at the moment when it costs.

Speaking to the other person's logic can improve our influence. Instead of ordering "trust me," we show the available facts and the way they respond to the old fear. Instead of demanding "be close," we look for what removes closeness and what nourishes it.

This approach does not guarantee that the other person will receive every value. A kind gesture can arrive in a language they do not recognize. We must then check the effect without concluding that our effort is worthless or that the partner is ungrateful.

What we write today goes beyond the couple. A child learns our way of speaking in anger. A loved one sees how we keep their confidence. Our coherence is built in these ordinary scenes, precisely because they do not resemble a prepared examination.

The questions that examine what I am writing

What does my way of treating people from whom I have nothing to gain reveal?

What portrait of me are my actions contradicting?

What positive quality must replace the flaw I have stopped?

Does my influence enlighten the other person or reduce their freedom?

What reference am I preparing for tomorrow?
