Capitolo 124

A couple is a house that is maintained before the crack appears

A solid relationship is maintained regularly through attention and adjustments, before small cracks become deep ruptures.

An older couple, a Black man and an East Asian woman, talking over a book.

When a crack appears on the wall of a house, no one waits for the roof to collapse before acknowledging that it exists.

We observe it. We look for its cause. We check whether it is growing. Then we intervene before the repair costs more than the maintenance that would have been enough.

In a couple, we sometimes do the opposite.

We notice a humiliating remark, excessive jealousy, a lie, a neglect or a forgotten commitment. We talk about it. Then life goes on, love is still there and the consequences do not seem catastrophic. So we move on to something else.

We hope that time will correct what no one is working on.

Time repairs nothing by itself. It only gives behaviors the opportunity to repeat themselves or gives people the opportunity to transform them.

A major crisis is often a small crack that we allowed the time to become a structure.

A living shared asset

We maintain a house, a car, a business and everything we consider precious. We accept that an asset loses its value when no one takes care of how it works.

Yet we sometimes talk about the couple as if its existence guaranteed its solidity.

We are together. We love each other. We made promises. We may have children. These realities matter, but they do not carry the relationship in our place.

A couple brings together two histories, two sensitivities, expectations that evolve and responsibilities that change. Nothing guarantees that these elements will adjust automatically.

A couple is not only what we feel for each other. It is also what we maintain between us.

A small fault can already contain a direction

Serious behavior does not first appear in its most extreme form.

It can begin with a joke that humiliates, a fit of jealousy in front of loved ones, a hidden sum of money or a forgotten appointment. Taken separately, each fact still seems bearable.

The preventive question is not only: "How much does this hurt me today?"

It is also: "What will become of our relationship if this behavior is repeated ten times?"

A trajectory can be read in the frequency, the intensity, the contexts and the response that follows the fault. Does the person acknowledge the effect produced? Are they looking for the cause? Are they changing something? Is the behavior receding or becoming more audacious?

An incident that is acknowledged and worked on does not tell the same future as an incident that is minimized, justified and then repeated.

Preventing does not mean condemning a person based on a single mistake. It means refusing to receive each repetition as if it were still the first.

The seriousness existed before the scene too many

Let us imagine that a partner speaks to us with contempt in public. We make a remark to her. She may apologize, then it all starts again in front of the family.

We protest again, without changing the conditions of the relationship. Later, she acts this way in front of professional partners and damages our credibility. We then want to make a strong decision.

The problem, however, did not become serious in front of them. That last scene only made visible the destination of the previous ones.

The person who humiliates remains responsible for their behavior. Our patience does not create their contempt.

Our responsibility lies elsewhere: have we named the boundary, explained what it protects and decided what we will do if it is crossed again?

A boundary that prepares no future response risks remaining a preference expressed in anger.

Forgiveness does not replace correction

A person cheats on their partner, asks for forgiveness and quickly regains trust, access and the advantages of the relationship. The cheating starts again. A few words soothe the new crisis, then everything goes back to the way it was.

Each infidelity belongs to the person who chose it. The forgiveness of the wounded person never becomes its cause.

But forgiving does not mean declaring the problem solved. Forgiveness can free us from the obligation to feed resentment. It guarantees neither trust nor the resumption of the couple under the same conditions.

Trust needs truth, reparation and new references. Without them, love risks making the fault comfortable without intending to.

A consequence protects, a revenge makes someone pay

Words are necessary. They are not always enough to make a boundary real.

A protective consequence announces what will change if the behavior continues. It remains linked to the problem, proportionate to the risk and achievable.

If a conversation becomes insulting, it stops. If shared money is misappropriated, access to it can be reorganized. If a betrayal persists, the continuation of the relationship can be re-examined.

The consequence says: "I do not control your choice, but I know what I will do so as not to absorb it endlessly anymore."

Revenge says: "I want you to suffer as I suffered."

The difference lies in the function of the act.

In the face of violence, coercion or danger, maintaining the bond is no longer the immediate priority. Safety and access to appropriate help come first.

Preventing requires less spectacle than repairing

We often organize our life around late repair.

We act impulsively, then count on the other's love. We neglect, then promise to make up for it. We postpone a conversation until it explodes, then admire the efforts needed to piece things back together.

There is a less spectacular maturity: anticipating.

It consists in recognizing the situations in which we lose our self-restraint, the commitments that our organization prevents us from keeping and the habits that make the next fault likely.

We can change a condition, ask for help, refuse a risky situation or prepare a different response.

The apology comes after the damage. Prevention protects before it.

Maintenance concerns the right conditions as much as the cracks

Preventing does not mean continuously inspecting the relationship in search of a defect. We can also learn from what works: a moment when we felt heard, a disagreement gone through without humiliation, a distribution that gave rest back to both people.

The challenge is to recognize the conditions of that success. Did we have time? Was the request more precise? Had a task been anticipated? Had one of us agreed to change method without seeing it as a defeat? These elements do not guarantee the reproduction of happiness. They nevertheless give something more practicable than the injunction to "make efforts."

A useful maintenance can remain discreet: confirming an appointment, giving notice of an impediment, thanking for an effect actually received or adjusting a task that has become too heavy. It does not turn every evening into an evaluation meeting. The relationship keeps a spontaneity, while ceasing to rely on crisis to recall what matters. Taking care of the bond also means protecting the conditions in which we love to live within it.

Our example does not work in the other's place

Showing the respect we ask for can give a direction. Acknowledging our mistakes and working on our flaws makes our words more credible.

But example is not a formula for control.

We can be patient without making the other patient. We can be faithful without making the other faithful. We can speak with care without automatically producing the desire to understand us.

Our example verifies our coherence. It replaces neither the other's will nor the decisions necessary when a behavior continues.

Otherwise, a silent expectation forms: "Since I do the right thing, you will inevitably end up doing the same."

Doing our part remains essential. Believing that it will also accomplish the other's part leaves us powerless.

Learning before having to live the scene

We easily comment on the difficulties of other couples. From the outside, the boundary they should have set seems obvious.

One day, when my couple was doing well, I spoke to one of my sisters-in-law. I saw her unease and explained to her what she needed to understand. A few weeks or a few months later, I encountered almost similar difficulties in my own couple.

I had used her story to assess her maturity, not to question my own fragilities.

Other people's stories can become indirect experience. Instead of asking: "How can anyone accept that?", we can ask: "What in us could lead to the same place?"

Another couple's misfortune does not predict ours. It reveals a human possibility. That is already enough to make us less arrogant and more attentive.

Anticipating without living in fear

Talking about risks does not provoke them.

Two partners can define what fidelity, respect, reparation, a second chance and a boundary mean to them. They can ask themselves how they would protect the home in the face of a betrayal, a hidden sum of money or a humiliation.

These exchanges do not predict their future reactions. A real situation will contain emotions that imagination does not reproduce.

They nevertheless provide a few principles before fear decides alone. They also make it possible to discover an important incompatibility before the crisis.

Healthy anticipation does not turn the couple into a surveillance post. It chooses the risks capable of destroying an essential value and prepares a responsible way of looking at them.

Updating the relationship

The expectations of the beginning do not always remain those of the tenth year.

Health, work, families, children and resources evolve. A wound sometimes makes a subject that was once light feel sensitive. A new need appears.

A maintained relationship creates appointments with its own reality. Partners can name what does them good, what is becoming heavy, what is improving and what risks deteriorating.

This updating must not become a permanent evaluation. It precisely prevents every important conversation from being triggered by an emergency.

Not every reproach is fair. Some requests are asymmetrical or controlling. Listening therefore does not mean obeying. It means examining what the words reveal before rejecting them.

We do not need to wait for proof that the house is collapsing to take care of what is still standing.

Looking at the crack before the collapse

Which small crack am I still minimizing?

What does its repetition reveal about its trajectory?

Which value is this crack already reaching?

What immediate response would prevent this crack from growing?

What simple maintenance can I begin this week?
