Capitolo 46

Love is not so much demanded as maintained

Love is sustained more by repeated, well-suited attentions than by insistent demands for proof.

A white woman and a middle-aged Middle Eastern man exchange attentive words in a plain café.

We can ask our partner to keep a promise, to take on a responsibility or to correct a behavior. We cannot order their heart to produce the same emotion indefinitely.

This limit does not make love fragile or capricious. It simply reminds us that a living bond feeds on what two people actually make each other experience.

Before demanding: "Love me as before," a question deserves to be asked: what does my presence make the person I love experience today?

Status does not make love automatic

Marriage, living together or a long history give the couple a framework. They create commitments and a precious stability. They do not turn feelings into an automatic function.

A wedding ring does not produce listening. A shared address does not create closeness. A title replaces neither attention, nor respect, nor the experiences that make you want to see each other again.

Commitment asks us not to give up at the first discomfort. It invites us to work on the bond. It does not authorize us to remove everything that made it desirable, then to present the other's promise as a guarantee against the consequences.

We exchange experiences, not just gestures

In a relationship, every behavior makes the other experience something.

A word can bring security or fear. A decision can make the other feel that their opinion matters or that they do not exist. A meal, a message, fidelity, listening or an initiative can produce relief, self-respect, desire, peace or the feeling of being chosen.

Conversely, a presence can become heavy without any spectacular fault being committed. Repeated criticism, indifference, promises without follow-through or the absence of joy end up associating the relationship with an experience the heart no longer asks for.

Our intention counts. But the other also lives the effect.

We may think we are giving a lot and produce little of what touches them. We may work relentlessly to provide material security while they suffer above all from our absence. We may speak of love while refusing the concrete decision they have been waiting for for months.

Maintaining the bond requires learning this particular person.

What light do we bring?

We sometimes like to recall everything we do not do: we do not cheat, we do not leave, we do not squander money, we do not insult.

These protections are essential. But the absence of fault does not by itself create a happy relationship.

A house can be safe and remain dark. Light still has to be brought into it: a conversation that does good, a laugh, an encouragement, attention to desire, a presence in a project, a curiosity about what the other is becoming.

This light does not need to be spectacular. It must be regular enough that our partner does not live merely with a decent person, but with a presence that truly enriches their existence.

The other meets the average of our presence

One grand gesture does not sum up a year. Neither does one bad day.

The partner mainly meets an average: our usual tone, our way of responding, the place we make for them, the reliability of our words, the quality of shared moments and what we do when we are wrong.

This average explains why an exceptional attention does not always repair months of neglect. It also explains why an occasional blunder does not necessarily destroy a long history of respect.

Maintaining love consists less in succeeding at one perfect scene than in improving this repeated experience.

Maintenance is recognized when nothing threatens to leave

An attention offered only after a crisis can be sincere and still be insufficient to establish ordinary trust. We then learn to receive intensity when the relationship is threatened, but less presence when it seems assured.

We can choose a modest contribution that does not depend on an alert: a moment of listening, a shared initiative, a way of giving warning about obstacles or a commitment regularly kept. It is not a mandatory ritual. It is about checking that a value remains available when no one is demanding proof.

Maintenance also requires feedback. Does this contribution still nourish the other? Has it changed function? Our regularity can be precious or become a habit beside the current need. We have to learn the person, not merely repeat our good intention.

The relationship does not become perfect because a gesture is regular. But it can stop depending on exceptional scenes to find its light again. Shared happiness is also built in what we make peaceful, reliable and alive without waiting for a loss to remind us of its importance.

Earning love does not mean buying it

The word "earn" becomes dangerous when it makes us believe that good deeds should oblige the other to love us.

No one owes us a feeling in exchange for our efforts. A gift, a sacrifice or fidelity buys neither the body, nor forgiveness, nor the impossibility of leaving.

But our behaviors give or remove relational reasons to invest. Being reliable, pleasant, attentive and capable of repairing does not command love; it creates an environment in which love has more possibilities to live.

This distinction protects both people. It prevents the giver from turning their positive qualities into a debt owed. It also prevents the receiver from demanding an emotion they no longer nourish through any act.

Our efforts can awaken the other's efforts

An initiative sometimes calls for an initiative. Listening makes a word possible. Recognition restores the desire to contribute. Value circulates and each person finds a reason to participate again.

This movement, however, is not guaranteed.

Some people receive a presence of great quality and do not know how to appreciate it. Others only want to keep the benefits of the relationship. They may be hurt, immature, closed or simply little inclined to build.

We must therefore not use this reflection to make the victim responsible for violence or betrayal. The other's fault belongs to them. Our responsibility concerns our way of responding, the boundaries we set and the relationship we ourselves contribute to producing.

Doing our part does not guarantee that the other will do theirs. It allows us to look at reality with more precision.

Maintaining does not mean exhausting yourself

Maintaining love is not doing all the work of the couple alone. It is not inventing ever more reasons to be loved while the other consumes the result.

It is continuing to bring value, observing whether it is received, listening to what truly touches the other and checking that the circulation exists in both directions.

If our partner no longer knows how to appreciate, we must talk. If words remain without effect, we must look at actions. If a capacity is missing, it can be learned. If all will is missing, our extra effort will not be enough to manufacture it.

Love is not demanded like a debt. It is protected by commitments, nourished by experiences and verified in the way two people take care of each other's will.

What my presence makes the other experience

What am I concretely maintaining in our bond today?

What light have I stopped bringing since the bond seemed assured?

Does my intention correspond to what the other actually feels?

What current reason am I giving them to keep building?

Are our efforts still circulating in both directions?
