We often know what to do to start a relationship.
We ask questions, remember details and look for what makes the other person laugh. Then the relationship is won. Commitment exists, habits set in and we sometimes move from discovery to management.
We continue to live with our partner, but gradually stop learning about them.
A relationship does not live only on the memory of what we have produced. It also lives on what our presence still produces.
Maintenance protects three lives that meet without merging: our partner's, our own and the couple's.
As soon as one of them has to disappear to feed the other two, the balance becomes deceptive. A relationship can stay standing while draining the person who carries it. It can keep two presences and lose all warmth.
Maintaining a couple means refusing these false successes.
The person we love remains in motion
At the beginning, every discovery draws our attention. Over the years, familiarity gives us the impression that we know.
We no longer ask, we conclude. We consult an old version of our partner while the real person learns to live without being looked at.
New responsibilities change their priorities. A success gives them confidence. A disappointment alters their trust. An attention that mattered at twenty-five can lose its importance at forty.
We change too.
Understanding the other person is therefore not an exam passed once and for all. It is a loop: discuss, observe, try, receive feedback and correct.
We cannot love with precision someone we have decided to stop learning about.
Understanding requires cooperation
Talking is essential, but not everything is revealed in a conversation.
Some people can name their needs. Others feel a discomfort without yet being able to explain it. Others answer too quickly that everything is fine or think their partner should guess.
Each person keeps a responsibility.
The person who wants to understand must ask better questions, choose a useful moment and listen without immediately preparing their defense. The person who wants to be understood must gradually come out of their silence.
A man may not be able to stand long discussions when he comes home exhausted. His partner can try a walk, a preparatory message or another moment. He cannot use his fatigue as a permanent closure.
Understanding is a cooperation. One cannot endlessly pursue a person who hides. The other cannot demand to be understood while refusing to provide the slightest key.
Fidelity to love is not fidelity to the gesture
A preference is not an eternal instruction manual.
A woman may prepare for years the cake her husband loved at the beginning. She puts care into it and is surprised that he reacts less and less.
He may be wrong to let this effort become invisible. She may also discover that she is mainly protecting an old proof of generosity. She continues to give what she knows how to do well without checking what would please today.
Love does not require changing every week what works. It requires remaining able to hear that a form has lost its effect.
We can keep the intention and change the way we convey it.
Warmth and consequences can live together
Some couples set against each other two attitudes that should sometimes work together.
Either they create good emotions and avoid any consequence. Or they protect a boundary by withdrawing all warmth.
Warmth without a framework can teach that love will absorb everything. A framework without warmth can turn the home into a place of surveillance.
A boundary does not need to humiliate in order to count. An attention does not need to erase the problem in order to be sincere.
We can refuse to fund a new recklessness and continue to speak with respect. We can name a wound without making every meal a punishment.
Maintaining does not mean avoiding all tension. It prevents a tension from becoming either a permanent permission or the whole identity of the bond.
The framework must protect the encounter, not replace it
A relationship can have clear rules and little warmth. It can also have a lot of tenderness and continually forgotten commitments. In both cases, an important dimension remains insufficiently nourished.
We can look at what each gesture accomplishes. A boundary protects an access or a responsibility. An attention makes a presence felt. A shared activity creates an experience. None of these gestures has to carry the whole couple alone.
Let us imagine that we refuse a reckless expense. We can maintain this decision without withdrawing all respectful words or any possibility of closeness. The disagreement must remain linked to its object. Conversely, a pleasant evening does not make the expense sustainable and must not bury the question.
Looking after three lives means keeping this precision. We count the person who sets the boundary, the one who receives it and the space in which they still want to live. The framework becomes useful when it leaves an encounter possible; warmth becomes responsible when it does not make the facts disappear.
Each of the three lives needs material
The relationship sometimes resembles a fire around which two people seek warmth.
If only one cuts the wood, carries it and protects the flame, both benefit from the fire for a time. From the outside, the couple works. On the inside, one person exhausts themselves maintaining a warmth that the other consumes as if it existed naturally.
The day she stops, the cold does not prove that she never loved. It can reveal that she no longer had material to continue.
Let us therefore look beyond the presence of the fire. Who feeds it? Who notices that it is dying down? Who only waits for it to give heat?
A relationship maintained by one person alone is not yet a maintained relationship. It is a relationship carried.
Keeping a part for oneself also protects the couple
We have sometimes learned that great love gives everything: its time, its attention, its rest and all its chances to forgive.
Keeping a part for oneself does not mean loving halfway.
It means keeping places where our energy renews itself: rest, projects, bonds, a dignity and an attention that do not depend entirely on the partner's response.
This reserve is not stolen from the couple when it allows us to return to it less empty and less bitter.
A person who abandons all their projects can end up expecting the partner to justify every sacrifice. Each of their unavailabilities then becomes a debt.
Self-respect does not compete with love for the couple. It prevents our generosity from becoming a disappearance whose repayment we will later demand.
Maintenance must not create an employee and a client
One studies the needs, anticipates, corrects and restarts all the conversations. The other evaluates the quality of the service, points out what is missing and takes advantage of what works.
This organization can be effective. It does not become fair because of that.
Our responsibility for the partner's happiness does not remove their responsibility for ours. Our creativity must not eternally compensate for their lack of initiative.
Maintaining a couple is a shared duty, even when the forms differ. One may be more skilled with words, the other with gestures. The difference enriches the circulation; it must not hide that everything comes from the same side.
The partner needs to be known without becoming our property. We need to receive a real value without disappearing into service. The couple needs attentions, corrections, novelty and shared memories.
Three lives must still be able to breathe.
Success does not consist only in saying that we are together. It is seen when each person still exists, when the other's presence produces a current value and when the bond does not depend on a silent exhaustion.
Which of our three lives am I looking after?
Which old version of my partner am I still maintaining?
Which faithful gesture no longer touches them as before?
Which of our three lives receives only the leftovers?
Which no would protect my energy without withdrawing my warmth?
Which concrete part of this maintenance can I take on without deciding in the other's place?
