Capitolo 101

Protection must not become the whole relationship

Protecting the relationship remains essential, without letting caution erase autonomy, reciprocity, joy and any possibility of momentum.

A young couple, a Black woman and a white man, talking around a table.

I knew an Ivorian couple whose marriage was shaken by the husband's infidelity.

The fault was serious. It had damaged trust and made the wife watchful. Yet this man had not become nothing but his fault. He continued to show certain attentions with constancy, without waiting each time for immediate forgiveness.

Those gestures erased nothing.

They merely reminded us that a fault, even a significant one, does not always tell the whole story of a person.

After a wound, we must protect ourselves. But if protection invades every room, the relationship ends up containing nothing but the fault it wanted to prevent.

A fault can occupy the whole house

A betrayal changes the way we look at things.

A delay becomes suspicious. A silence seems to hide something. A happy moment seems dangerous, as if we risked forgetting too quickly. We check, interpret and look for the signs of a new lie.

This vigilance has a reason.

Yet it becomes exhausting when it has no precise domain, no observation period and no criterion for review.

The fault then enters meals, outings, conversations, the body and even sincerely pleasant moments. It no longer merely protects a wounded place. It becomes the entire atmosphere.

A useful protection must be able to answer: what risk are we trying to reduce? What access must change? What sign would make it possible to observe progress? When will we look at the measure again?

Coldness sometimes expresses pain without repairing it

After a wound, we can become cold because all warmth seems to offer a reward.

We fear that a smile will be taken for forgiveness. We avoid a tender gesture so as not to minimize what happened. We want the other person to still feel the seriousness of their act.

This distance can be genuine. Desire and trust do not come back on command.

But coldness can also become a single language. It informs that we are suffering without producing what would help us to know: answers, consistency, reparative acts, a timeframe or a decision.

We can say: "I can laugh with you today without having regained my trust."

A pleasant emotion is not an acquittal.

Clarity saves us from using every gentleness as a legal verdict.

Being right about the fault does not make every response useful

The wounded person holds an important truth: they did not create the other's fault.

That truth must remain whole.

It does not mean that every reaction protects the relationship or the person. Monitoring every area, humiliating, exposing secrets or punishing the children does not become right because the initial wound was serious.

We can be legitimate in our pain and clumsy in the way we carry it.

Acknowledging a useless response does not share the initial fault. It allows us not to add a harm that takes us even further from what we want.

Responsibility for the infidelity remains with the one who committed it. Responsibility for our conduct remains with us.

Positive qualities do not redeem the fault

A person can be caring, hardworking, generous with the children and have betrayed.

Their positive qualities do not form a payment that cancels the fault.

"I do so much for this family" does not answer the lie. "I am always there" does not take away the other's right to demand reparation linked to the problem.

But the fault does not oblige us to deny every positive quality either.

If we decide to stay for a while, seeing what remains good can help us assess the whole relationship. It imposes on us neither forgiveness nor the continuation of the couple.

The truth does not need to repaint the whole person in a single color.

It can say: "That gesture was serious. This positive quality still exists. I must now decide what the whole allows or no longer allows."

Positive gestures must remain free

Continuing to prepare a meal, to say thank you, to joke or to support a project does not mean we have given up our boundaries.

These gestures can simply express what we still want to be.

They become dangerous when we perform them to reassure the other, to avoid their anger or to respond to pressure. The wounded person does not have to simulate happiness to reward the partner's efforts.

They must never offer their body without desire in order to prove they want to repair the couple.

Consent remains whole. Tenderness is not owed. Positive presence can return at its own pace, in the forms that are true.

Preserving a share of goodness does not mean submitting.

It sometimes means refusing to let the fault also choose the way we inhabit each day.

Receiving a gesture without pronouncing a verdict on the whole relationship

After a fault, we can believe that appreciating an attention would amount to reopening all our trust. This equivalence makes every simple moment difficult: saying thank you resembles forgiving, smiling resembles resuming the relationship as before. We then lose the possibility of receiving something without concluding about everything.

It is possible to name the scope of the gesture: "That help did me good today. The question of our trust remains open." This is not handing out a reward or playing a role. It is letting the facts keep their dimension. An attention does not prove a transformation; a fault does not necessarily strip all reality from the attention.

This freedom also concerns refusal. If we do not wish to receive that gesture, we do not have to do so in order to encourage a change. The one who committed the fault cannot ask for an emotion in exchange for their effort. We are seeking a relationship where new signs can be observed without pressure, with room for information, time, boundaries and each person's decision.

A period of protection must produce information

After a serious fault, we may not know immediately whether we want to stay.

We can name a period of observation: "I am not promising today what comes next. I need to see whether your actions become reliable."

This period can examine precise elements: the truth given, the stopping of the behavior, respect for agreements, the ability to hear the pain, seeking help and consistency over time.

The one who committed the fault cannot demand an emotional reward after a few efforts. They do not decide the wounded person's inner calendar.

The wounded person can, for their part, look at the facts without constantly moving a condition that was never stated.

Observing does not mean waiting forever.

The period must bring us closer to information, then to a decision.

A consequence needs boundaries

Protection must remain linked to the fault.

A financial betrayal can justify temporarily separating certain accesses. An infidelity can lead to clarifying contacts, movements or commitments of transparency freely accepted.

But reparation must not become an authorization to monitor a whole life, to destroy autonomy or to humiliate endlessly.

The measure must have an objective and a condition for review.

It can never contain violence, sexual coercion or deprivation of essential needs. It must not use the children as messengers, witnesses or means of pressure.

A consequence protects a capacity to choose.

A permanent desert ends up making any construction impossible.

Staying must become a choice again

We can stay out of love, to observe, to protect the children during a transition or because leaving requires preparation.

In a violent situation, the difficulty of leaving never means that the person consents to the violence. Safety and appropriate help come before confrontation.

When the relationship still allows a choice, a question nevertheless ends up arising: what do we want to do with what remains?

If no goodness is allowed anymore, if no progress can be recognized and if all closeness has become impossible, we must look honestly at whether we still want this relationship.

Staying only to keep the other in indefinite sorrow does not repair us.

Leaving is not always the only answer. Staying does not oblige us any more to turn the shared life into punishment.

Let us not give the fault everything it did not take

A betrayal can steal a trust, a story, a security or an image of the future.

It has already taken a great deal.

We do not have to give it also every laugh, every project, every capacity to love and every positive quality we want to keep within ourselves.

This does not mean resuming the relationship as before. It means protecting more than our fear: our discernment, our dignity, our freedom and our ability to still produce good.

We do not have to choose between impunity and the desert.

We can keep a clear boundary without making that boundary our whole house.

The questions that keep the fault from taking everything

What precise risk is my protection trying to reduce?

Which measure produces truly useful information today?

Can I acknowledge a gesture without granting my forgiveness?

Does my distance express a need or a punishment?

What do I still want to preserve in myself?
