We love the idea that a person could be the love of our life.
This expression gives our story a special grandeur. It promises that, amid billions of human beings, our heart would have recognized an irreplaceable person.
But an emotion that lasts does not yet tell us what it deserves to govern.
We can love a person, the preserved image of them, what we were at their side, or the scenario they still represent. These attachments resemble one another in the heart. They do not build the same future.
While we protect an old image, a real person may be in front of us, imperfect but present, capable of learning, of making amends and of building.
If we ask them to reproduce exactly what another person once stirred in us, we are not meeting them. We are asking them to enter a memory that is already occupied.
The person we dream of must not erase the one who builds. But the person who is present does not automatically receive our love as a reward for their efforts. We must look at what each one has truly made possible.
The heart and life do not always give the same title
The expression "love of our life" can refer to the person we never stopped admiring, even when we did not build anything lasting with them.
The expression "man of our life" or "woman of our life" can tell another story: that of the person with whom we shared ordinary mornings, plans, expenses, difficulties and fresh starts.
These two people can be one and the same.
They can also be different. One occupied our imagination. The other occupied our daily life.
These expressions are not diplomas. They reveal only that a person can deeply mark our inner life without being the one with whom a real life was possible.
The persistence of a feeling does not prove compatibility
If we still miss a person after ten years, we can conclude that they were necessarily the best. If no one produces the same intensity, we think that no one will take their place.
Above all, this duration proves that an attachment remains.
Perhaps this person represents a first passion, our youth, a lost freedom, an unfinished desire, or the version of ourselves that we preferred.
All of this explains the persistence without demonstrating compatibility.
An emotion measures what happens within us. A viable relationship requires looking at what happens between two people: their way of deciding, of making amends, of keeping their commitments and of still wanting to build when intensity is no longer enough.
An absent image no longer contradicts itself
The image has an immense advantage over the person who is present: it no longer contradicts itself.
We can keep the best looks, the desire and the promises. Memory can leave in the shadows the incompatibilities, the silences and the behaviors that made the story difficult.
The person who is present, by contrast, lives before us without editing. We see their fatigue, their habits, their family, their contradictions and their morning mood.
Comparing a complete person to a selected image creates an impossible competition.
The former person remains brilliant because we look at them from a distance. The new one seems less extraordinary because they endure the test of closeness.
Before concluding that no love will ever equal the previous one, let us reintroduce into the comparison everything that real life contained and everything it would probably have revealed.
Intensity can attach us to what does not choose us
A friend was telling me about a man she had known since childhood. Their story had been intense. She claimed that, no matter which man she married, she would always go back to him.
The sentence seemed to declare an exceptional love. It also revealed an inner captivity.
This man had built his life with another person. He could still awaken an old emotion or let it be believed that a place remained possible. But when reality had demanded a choice, he had not built with her.
A person can occupy an immense place in our heart and a very small place in the building of our life.
The more we confuse these two places, the more we risk sacrificing a concrete future to a story that chooses us only in the imagination.
The person who is present must not be chosen out of duty
This friend had then met a man who was available, respectful and willing. On several points, he corresponded to what she said she was looking for.
Yet she did not feel comfortable enough with him. She missed the other one.
It would be too simple to order her to love the man who is present because he seemed better. A list of positive qualities does not command the heart. A person's efforts create no sentimental debt.
But missing the former love should not decide on its own either.
We must distinguish a current incompatibility from the impossibility of letting a new relationship produce a different emotion.
The person who is present deserves to be evaluated for who they are. The former one deserves to be evaluated for what they truly built, not for the power that their absence continues to exert.
Missing someone does not always compare two real lives
An absent person can continue to receive in our imagination all the possibilities that daily life never verified. The person who is present, by contrast, encounters fatigue, disagreements and ordinary details. If we compare the best scenario of one with the entire reality of the other, our scales are already tilted.
We can distinguish what we miss: this particular person, an intensity, the version of ourselves that the relationship awakened, or a future left unfinished. These dimensions can coexist. Naming them does not command us to love someone else; it prevents us from asking the present to repay exactly a past experience.
Let us imagine that we reject every simple moment because it does not resemble the beginnings of an old story. We can ask ourselves whether the present moment truly lacks value or whether we accept only the old form. Conversely, a respectful presence does not create a debt of attraction. We can acknowledge the good we receive and not want the couple.
The choice becomes freer when neither nostalgia nor gratitude chooses alone. We look at what is alive, what is imagined and what two people truly wish to build now.
The will to build is an observable quality
A person does not always arrive with all the answers. They may lack experience and still have visible flaws. But they can show a decisive quality: the will to learn and to build.
This will is not summed up by "I will make an effort." It becomes a trajectory. The person asks questions, listens, tries differently, observes the effects, acknowledges their mistakes and starts again with greater precision.
This will deserves to enter our evaluation in the same way as attraction and history.
It is not always enough. Two willing people can remain incompatible. But its absence turns even a supposed great compatibility into an empty promise.
You do not build a life with the potential of a person who refuses to make something of it.
A useful presence is not enough either
We can stay with a person because they bring organization, status, presence, children, assistance or material security.
These contributions have value. They deserve recognition.
But a person should not be reduced to the function they fulfill. Being useful in our life does not necessarily mean being known, desired and loved in their whole person.
Let us check whether we still love the real being or above all the system that their presence maintains. The difference appears in our curiosity about their world, our way of receiving their needs and our willingness to create happiness for them too.
Duration, either, does not by itself prove that love still circulates. It tells of time shared. We must still look at what that time contains today.
Let us look at the past and the present with the same demands
Refusing to idealize the past does not mean idealizing the current partner.
A person is not good for us merely because they are there or claim to want to build. Let us observe what their presence produces, their compatibility in the important areas, their ability to keep their commitments and the trajectory of their efforts.
Let us compare with the same demands: actions, will, respect, reciprocity, difficulties addressed and a future made possible.
We are choosing neither an old photograph nor a present promise. We are choosing, as far as possible, a complete reality.
When the real person loves us, learns and builds with us, let us look at them without asking them to become the copy of an old emotion.
The person we dream of can keep a place in our story. They must not receive for free the future that only a present construction can deserve.
Which person am I really looking at?
Which absent image still serves as the measure for my present?
What can this image no longer show me?
Did this former person truly choose me in their actions?
Which current construction does my comparison make invisible?
Am I evaluating the past and the present with the same demands?
