We will never be exactly as we were before

By Thierry Bertrand

After shared experiences, a relationship cannot return exactly to its former state but can build a new form.

“You have changed.”

This sentence is sometimes true. Our partner gives us less attention, makes less effort or no longer treats us as a priority. We no longer find the light of the beginning that made us feel exceptional in their eyes.

But noticing a change is not enough to understand it.

The sentence does not say what changed, when the movement began, what fed it or the part each person played. It can even lock us into a comfortable story: everything used to be fine, and then the other person became the problem.

Reality is rarely that simple.

The change we see and the change we forget

Before attributing all the distance to our partner, let us look at our own evolution.

Do we still do what we used to do to please them? Are we as curious about their world? Have we kept the attention and the desire to create joy that existed at the beginning?

The point is not to manufacture equal blame. Our change justifies neither betrayal, contempt nor abandoning a promise.

But we cannot understand the mechanism while removing our own evolution from the file.

Sometimes the other person reduced their efforts after we did. Sometimes we withdrew because they had begun to do so. Sometimes each waits for the other to start again, and distance becomes a habit.

The question is not only: “Who changed first?”

It is also: “What are our changes producing between us today?”

When the job interview ends

The beginning of a relationship sometimes resembles a job interview.

We pay attention to our appearance, listen more, answer messages and show our most attractive qualities. Our partner often does the same.

Then the position seems secured. We do not necessarily stop loving. Sometimes we stop courting, observing and maintaining what made our presence enjoyable.

No one can live forever in a perfect performance. But the more natural version of ourselves should not remove all the reasons we gave the other person to choose us.

We want to be loved as we were on the first day while no longer offering the same experience of ourselves.

Why should the attention remain identical if the lived relationship has changed profoundly?

Novelty cannot carry the relationship for us

At the beginning, a smile seems magical and an ordinary action becomes precious because it comes from someone who is still new to us. Our imagination fills the empty spaces with what we hope to discover.

Then our attention grows accustomed. The presence that made our heart race becomes the one we encounter every morning.

This familiarity does not prove that love has ended. It means that novelty can no longer do the work alone.

Qualities we maintain, thoughtful gestures, memories, progress and plans must create new reasons to look.

Was it a change or a discovery?

We sometimes say that our partner has changed when we are discovering a part we did not know.

If the person used to be punctual and no longer is, a behavior has changed. If they were always late but we found it charming at the beginning, our view has changed. If they used to respect us and begin to humiliate us, a new fact must be named. If we finally see an old attitude that we used to excuse, perhaps what is new is our clarity.

These situations do not call for the same response.

Flaws also change appreciation. A person’s dignity does not diminish because they have limitations. But the relational experience changes when selfishness, jealousy, lack of support or unfulfilled promises keep recurring.

Love does not forbid the other person from updating their image of us.

Let us therefore check what our behavior gives them to look at today.

Improving does not mean buying love

When we discover our part, we can become more attentive, more reliable or more present again. We can learn to listen and work on a flaw that damages the relationship.

But our improvement does not guarantee that the other person will stay or regain the same desire.

We do not change to buy an outcome. We change because an acknowledged flaw must no longer govern our life and because this improvement increases our ability to love, here or in the next part of our story.

Effort can make a different future possible. It cannot force the other person to choose it.

The past cannot become our project

We often want to become as we were before.

But we were then two people who knew each other less, carried by novelty and not yet having gone through the same disappointments.

Those versions of us belong to the past.

The beginning can remain a point of reference. It reminds us of what we knew how to create and what we neglected. It must not become a model to reproduce identically.

We will not recover the unknowing of the beginning. We can build a clearer appreciation, nourished by what we now know.

The real question is no longer: “How can we make everything go back to the way it was?”

It becomes: “What new reasons can we create to appreciate each other today?”

What must we look at today?

  1. What specific change am I reproaching the other person for?
  2. What has changed in my own way of loving?
  3. Is this a new behavior or an old reality that has been discovered?
  4. What quality from the beginning have I stopped maintaining?
  5. What current facts can support my decision to build, or not to build, with this person?
