We love the idea that someone can be the love of our life.
This expression gives our story a special grandeur. It promises that among billions of human beings, our heart has recognized someone irreplaceable.
But an emotion that lasts does not yet tell us what it deserves to govern.
We can love a person, the image we have kept of them, who we were beside them or the scenario they still represent. These attachments feel similar in the heart. They do not build the same future.
While we protect an old image, a real person may be in front of us, imperfect but present, capable of learning, repairing and building.
If we ask them to reproduce exactly what another person made us feel, we are not meeting them. We are asking them to enter a memory that is already occupied.
The person we dream of must not erase the one who is building. But the person who is present does not automatically receive our love as a reward for their efforts. We need to look at what each person has genuinely made possible.
The heart and life do not always give the same title
The expression “the love of our life” can refer to the person we have never stopped admiring, even when we did not build something lasting with them.
The expression “the man of our life” or “the woman of our life” can tell another story: that of the person with whom we shared ordinary mornings, plans, expenses, difficulties and new beginnings.
These two people may be one and the same.
They may also be different. One occupied our imagination. The other occupied our daily life.
These expressions are not diplomas. They simply reveal that someone can leave a deep mark on our inner life without being the person with whom a real life was possible.
The persistence of a feeling does not prove compatibility
If we still miss someone after ten years, we may conclude that they must have been the best. If no one produces the same intensity, we think no one will take their place.
This duration mainly proves that an attachment remains.
Perhaps this person represents a first passion, our youth, a lost freedom, an unfulfilled desire or the version of ourselves we preferred.
All of this explains persistence without demonstrating compatibility.
An emotion measures what happens within us. A viable relationship requires looking at what happens between two people: how they decide, repair, keep their commitments and still want to build when intensity is no longer enough.
An absent image no longer contradicts itself
The image has an immense advantage over the current person: it no longer contradicts itself.
We can keep the best looks, the desire and the promises. Memory can leave in the shadows the incompatibilities, silences and behaviors that made the story difficult.
The present person, by contrast, lives before us without editing. We see their tiredness, habits, family, contradictions and morning mood.
Comparing a whole person with a selected image creates an impossible competition.
The former person remains radiant because we look at them from a distance. The new person seems less extraordinary because they endure the test of proximity.
Before concluding that no love will equal the previous one, let us bring back into the comparison everything real life contained and everything it would probably have revealed.
Intensity can bind us to what does not choose us
A friend was telling me about a man she had known since childhood. Their story had been intense. She said that no matter which man she married, she would always return to him.
The sentence seemed to declare an exceptional love. It also revealed an inner captivity.
This man had built his life with someone else. He could still awaken an old emotion or suggest that a place remained possible. But when reality had required a choice, he had not built with her.
A person can occupy an immense place in our heart and a very small place in the building of our life.
The more we confuse these two places, the more we risk sacrificing a concrete future to a story that chooses us only in our imagination.
The person who is present must not be chosen out of duty
This friend later met a man who was available, respectful and willing to make an effort. In several respects, he matched what she said she was looking for.
Yet she did not feel comfortable enough with him. She missed the other man.
It would be too simple to order her to love the man who was present because he seemed better. A list of qualities does not command the heart. A person’s efforts create no emotional debt.
But missing the former love should not decide everything either.
We need to distinguish a current incompatibility from an inability to let a new relationship produce a different emotion.
The present person deserves to be assessed for who they are. The former person deserves to be assessed for what they actually built, not for the power their absence continues to exert.
The willingness to build is an observable quality
A person does not always arrive with every answer. They may lack experience and still have visible flaws. But they can show a decisive quality: the willingness to learn and build.
This willingness is not summed up by “I will make an effort.” It becomes a trajectory. The person asks questions, listens, tries differently, observes the effects, acknowledges mistakes and begins again with greater precision.
This willingness deserves a place in our assessment alongside attraction and history.
It is not always enough. Two willing people can remain incompatible. But its absence turns even supposedly great compatibility into an empty promise.
We cannot build a life with the potential of a person who refuses to do anything with it.
A useful presence is not enough either
We can stay with someone because they bring organization, status, presence, children, assistance or material security.
These contributions have value. They deserve recognition.
But a person should not be reduced to the function they fulfill. Being useful in our life does not necessarily mean being known, desired and loved as a whole person.
Let us check whether we still love the real person or mainly the system their presence maintains. The difference appears in our curiosity about their world, how we receive their needs and our willingness to create happiness for them too.
Duration, likewise, does not by itself prove that love still circulates. It tells of the time shared. We still need to look at what that time contains today.
Look at the past and the present with the same standards
Refusing to idealize the past does not mean idealizing the current partner.
Someone is not good for us merely because they are there or say they want to build. Let us observe what their presence produces, their compatibility in important areas, their ability to keep their commitments and the trajectory of their efforts.
Let us compare using the same standards: actions, willingness, respect, reciprocity, difficulties addressed and the future made possible.
We are choosing neither an old photograph nor a present promise. As far as possible, we are choosing a complete reality.
When the real person loves us, learns and builds with us, let us look at them without asking them to become a copy of an old emotion.
The person we dream of can keep a place in our history. They must not be given, for nothing, the future that only building in the present can deserve.
Which person am I really looking at?
- What absent image still serves as the measure of my present?
- What can that image no longer show me?
- Did that former person actually choose me through their actions?
- What is being built today that my comparison makes invisible?
- Am I assessing the past and present by the same standards?
